Mau Loa o Mauna Ulu to Keauhou Backpack Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Here’s another route—besides that taken by Trips 38 and 39—to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park’s near-wilderness area along its Puna coast. Scattered widely across that area are three shelters and a cabin, each with a roof designed to catch rainwater and deliver it to a tank (your only source of drinking water—be sure to treat it—in this hot, humid region). Keauhou Shelter, the nearest shelter from the Keauhou Trailhead off the Chain of Craters Road, is just inland from a small sunning and snorkeling area.

The region is extrememly popular. Pause to read the interpretive sign at the trailhead and then go north into the kipuka. A kipuka is an area of vegetation spared by later lava flows. Over time, an isolated kipuka may come to harbor unique animals and plants—animals and plants that have followed their own evolutionary course since the kipuka was largely cut off from the ecosystem that once surrounded it."
