Lava Tree State Monument Trail

Lava Tree State Monument Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"An easy stroll in a beautiful, tranquil setting, with volcanic features that will be new to mainlanders. You can readily combine it with a leisurely visit to Panaewa Rainforest Zoo for a relaxing day of sightseeing. What more could you ask for? As this is a loop, you can start in either direction.

This description assumes a start from the south end of the parking lot (away from the entrance road), past a large interpretive sign. Signs warn you to stay on the paths—there are dangerous cracks in the earth off-trail—and to watch out for falling branches. Hau, ti, and glory-bush (the one with the wide purple flowers) form a tropical understory to a lacy roof of immense monkeypod trees, some garlanded with pothos vines. Hau thickets form part of the backdrop, monstera another."
