Hilina Pali Road end to Pepeiao Cabin Backpack Trail Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Pepeiao Cabin (“Pepeiau Shelter” on the topo), in a meadow of deep grasses on the edge of the Kau Desert, has a feeling of tranquility and remoteness, even a touch of melancholy, unmatched by the other backcountry shelters and cabins, even though all the others are in fact more remote in terms of mileage. You can visit Pepeiao as a dayhike or stay overnight. If you are staying overnight, plan to camp out in your own tent in the vicinity of Pepeiao Cabin, because the cabin area is swarming with ants and, after nightfall, with cockroaches.
The Puna-Kau coast cautions apply to Pepeiao, too. A path that’s partly paved, partly graveled, and partly over sand leads southeast away from the parking area into the Kau Desert through a giant jumble of aa. The path is flanked by a scrubby cover of ohia, pukiawe, and aalii. Emerging from the scrub, you dip down into a broad gully, and the aa presently gives way to pahoehoe and sand."
