Halemaumau Trail

Halemaumau Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"After winding down through the “rainforest hills” below Volcano House (some fine birding opportunities here), you venture out onto the black pahoehoe floor of Kilauea Crater for a close-up view of Halemaumau Crater. From the west end of the parking lot in front of Kilauea Visitor Center (left end as you face the center), carefully cross Crater Rim Road and pick up a paved path marked only by the “hiking trail” symbol and a sign pointing you to Volcano House.

You pass a steam vent and, at a marked junction, take the right fork toward Halemaumau and the observatory (this is part of the Crater Rim Trail). You descend and, in a few more steps, you’re at another junction. Here, you turn left onto the Halemaumau Trail (and away from the Crater Rim Trail)."

My wife, daughter (who are non-hikers), and I were staying at the Kilauea Military Camp for four days and doing alot of sightseeing in the park by rent-a-car. Our schedule allowed me one morning to do as extensive as a hike as I wished. I initially was thinking the Crater Rim Trail would be the ultimate HVNP hike but when standing on the rim it became obvious that there are not many places I can hike in to and across a recently active volcanic crater instead of just looking down into it. Sunrise at 4000 feet in Sep. is a bit cool and this morning was also varying between overcast to drizzle to a wind blown light rain, which wasn't bad because I read it can get quite warm on the crater floor. I made a loop hike by starting at the Visitors Center then down and across the Halemaumau trail then east across and up the Byron Ledge Trail then back down, across, and back up on the Kilauea Iki Trail. I finished the loop by joining the Crater Rim Trail and heading north along the Waldron Ledge back to the Volcano House and Visitors Center. Distance was 9.5 miles and took me just over three hours. It was one of my most memorable hikes, just awesome scenery.
