Footprints Trail

Footprints Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"A shelter at the end of this trip protects human footprints left perhaps 200 years ago in a kind of volcanic mud that turned to rock. No one really knows for sure how old these particular footprints are or who made them. But many like to think they were left behind when Keoua’s army crossed the Kau Desert in three groups, and the third group found everyone in the second group dead in the middle of the desert—more below.

The first segment of your short trail is paved, and in a few steps you’ll find the petroglyph viewing area set up for the enjoyment of those who cannot walk the whole trail. Because the petroglyphs are raised for easy viewing and are widely separated, perhaps to let people whose mobility is limited get around them, they are ideally placed for photograph-taking. This is the place to get your camera out and start snapping away!"
