Crater Rim Trail Around Kilauea and Kilauea Iki Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"In reading about the Big Island, you undoubtedly have encountered descriptions of a long trail that completely encircles not only Kilauea caldera but Kilauea Iki pit crater. Well, this is it—the biggie, a spectacular trip that’s unbeatable for its scenery and the sheer variety of its life zones.

The Crater Rim Trail does not visit Halemaumau, historically the most active part of the caldera, but the latter is so easily visited from Crater Rim Road that you can pick it up on another hike From the west end of the parking lot in front of Kilauea Visitor Center (left end as you face the center), carefully cross Crater Rim Road and pick up a paved path marked only by the “hiking trail” symbol and a sign pointing you to Volcano House (which you will not pass until the very end of this hike). The path plunges west into fat banks of uluhe fern, passing ginger, tree ferns, and ohia. Keep an eye out for signs labeling the plants if you’re interested in sharpening your plant-identifying skills."

Very cool...how often do you get to walk over a crater...that is still steaming and collapsing! Most of the trail was smooth and paved. Walking through Ohia and Fern forest which cools you off, there are a couple of looks outs and rest areas along the way. The crater itself is full of steam vents, but beware they are sulfer vents, not recommended for people with respiratory problems. As you are walking along the crater there are spots that will feel warmer than others =)

Take lots of water.
