Hauula Loop Trail

Hauula Loop Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The Hauula Loop Trail is a beautiful mountain hike in the Kaipapau Forest Reserve above Hauula. The trail crosses Waipilopilo Gulch and winds up the hillside through an ironwood, Norfolk Island pine and paperback eucalyptus forest with lush fern and moss undergrowth. Fallen needles from the trees carpet the path with a thick matting. From the ridge are panoramic views of Kaipapau Valley, the Koolau Range and the eastern coastline."

A gorgeous trail, easy to access 1 mile from coast highway. Trail well maintained and easy to follow. Hike took 3 hours -- not the rated 1.5 -- for fairly fit 50's, stopping to appreciate views, mountain pools, woods. Saw only 3 people total in 3 hours. Views at top are of a secluded valley looking very "old Hawaii". Trail has a variety of landscapes and terrains and like most Hawaiian mountain trails, can be steep, muddy/wet and slippery in places. My walking stick was definitely useful. A disposable pancho would be also. A great trail for those wanting a taste of Hawaiian tropical woods among other vacation activities. I'd definitely do this one again and others like it.
