Crashing surf, several blowholes, ancient burial sites, and breathtaking scenery are the rewards of this walk along a wild and lonely coast. It follows a historic Hawaiian route known as the Kings Trail, dating back to the 1550s. Follow the trailhead sign to the right, makai, toward the Black Sand Beach, pausing to admire the spectacular coastline at an overlook: turquoise sea, white foam, and black lava against a background of intense green mountains. Descend steeply on a path that curves left (north) down toward the beach.
