Wai'anapanapa Coast Trail

Wai'anapanapa Coast Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This hike follows a shoreline of incomparable beauty, with dozens of blowholes and sea arches, fascinating lava formations, archeological sites, and possible sightings of sea turtles and dolphins.

The route goes all the way to Hana, but beyond the first mile the way is rough, indistinct, and dangerous if you aren’t very, very careful. The hike described here goes about 1 mile out and back, and includes the most exciting part of the coast."

"Crashing surf, several blowholes, ancient burial sites, and breathtaking scenery are the rewards of this walk along a wild and lonely coast. It follows a historic Hawaiian route known as the Kings Trail, dating back to the 1550s. Follow the trailhead sign to the right, makai, toward the Black Sand Beach, pausing to admire the spectacular coastline at an overlook: turquoise sea, white foam, and black lava against a background of intense green mountains. Descend steeply on a path that curves left (north) down toward the beach." Read more
