This is a short tour of several natural wonders created when flowing molten lava poured into the sea. The coastline is classic Hawaii, picture postcard pretty with swaying palms and turquoise water. It is also the setting of a romantic...and tragic...Hawaiian myth. A sign in the parking lot directs you to the left where an interpretive panel tells one of several versions of the story of a Hawaiian princess who was killed in a sea cave by her jealous husband. Now and then the water at the base of the cave turns red with her blood, according to the myth—or with a bloom of aquatic life, according to biologists.
