Pipiwai Trail to Makahiku and Waimoku Falls

Pipiwai Trail to Makahiku and Waimoku Falls Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Makahiku Falls and Waimoku Falls are towering cataracts on the streams above Oheo Gulch. Makahiku Falls, a half mile from the trailhead, plunges 185 feet off the forested cliff into the deep gorge.

The trail ends further up the stream at the base of Waimoku Falls, set in a 400-foot rock wall amphitheater. The hike parallels Oheo Stream and Pipiwai Stream up the wet verdant valley, passing ancient taro farm sites and crossing two bridges. The jungle includes guava, mango, Christmas-berry trees and towering bamboo forests."

This trail is located at the end of the road to Hana and next to the Seven Pools. We thought we'd seen all the waterfalls we needed and reluctantly did this on a whim. Best decision all trip and one of my favorite waterfalls.
The first 1/2 mile or so is straight uphill on stairs, after that the trail flattens out for the majority of your journey. Have waterproof shoes or ones you can get wet for this trail. Good shade cover, especially in the bamboo forest. Expect high traffic on the trail.
