Lyon ’s Hill to Fagan ’s Cross

Lyon ’s Hill to Fagan ’s Cross Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Paul Fagan, founder of the Hotel Hana Maui in 1946 (Kauiki Inn), introduced cattle ranching to Hana. He purchased the cane-covered hills surrounding Hana and brought herds of Herefords from Molokai to establish Hana Ranch.

Fagan ’s Cross, a memorial to Paul Fagan who passed away in 1960, sits atop the 545-foot summit of Puu O Kahaula, known as Lyon ’s Hill. This hike leads up to the lava rock cross. From the cross are incredible views overlooking the emerald green slopes across the town of Hana and Hana Bay. To the west (inland) are mountain views of Puu Hoolewa, Puu Kaukanu, Koaekea and Puu Puou."

If you are on a day trip and only have a few hours to enjoy east Maui, check out the bluff trails at Wai'anapanapa State Park or the Pipiwai or Lower Kolua Trail in the Kipahulu Valley section of the Haleakala National Park, about 10 miles past Hana. This trail gives you a view of cows and a nice vista overlooking Hana Bay, but it looks deceptively easy when in fact the slope / elevation compared to the value receiving seems not worth the effort.
