Haleakala National Park: Ka Lu‘u o ka ‘O‘o Cinder Cone Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Drop into the muzzle of the world’s largest dormant volcanoes! Haleakala means "house of the sun" in Hawaiian, and one could easily believe the sun beds down here: Scorched earth stripes this 10,023 foot volcano in multi-colored washes; it shifts underfoot to reveal highlights cast in volcanic sand. But these hues were forged from fires within the Earth, far from any celestial body. Now they're exposed on top of a massive shield volcano that occupies 75 percent of Maui."

Haleakala is an incredible place. The landscape is surreal, like walking on another planet. The way the clouds and rainbows play with the craters and vastness of it all is so eerie, beautiful, and breathtaking.
