Toccoa River Trail

Toccoa River Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The Benton MacKaye Trail and the Duncan Ridge Trail share this in-and-out route between Route 60 and the Toccoa River, and the highlight of this section is an impressive suspension bridge over the river.

The Georgia Appalachian Trail Conference and the U.S. Forest Service constructed the 260-foot bridge in 1977, and it offers an excellent view of the Toccoa River in both directions. Tooni Mountain is actually a series of small knobs across a long ridgeline with elevations that range from 2396 to 2720 feet."

A very nice, well blazed (white diamonds) trail. Parking is along Highway 60 directly across from the trail crossing and the access road. The first mile was difficult with a pretty intense climb, but the other 2.5 miles was fairly easy while walking along the ridge line. The suspension bridge crossing the Toccoa River is very nice and a great excuse to take this trail. There is a forest access road that leads directly to this bridge. We passed no one on the trail but met several people at the bridge. There are two options for heading back to Highway 60, either returning on the trail, or walking up the access road. The first 1.5 miles of the return trail trip would be consistently uphill so we took the road. It's fairly flat and very well maintained. Just have to keep an eye out for cars heading towards the suspension bridge. Overall, a very nice trip.
