The Elachee nature trails include several short loops that explore the creeks and rolling hardwood forest areas south and east of the Elachee Nature Science Center. The Ed Dodd Trail (0.75 mile) follows Walnut Creek, passing an interesting stream restoration project. Fern beds surround the Elachee Creek Trail (0.5 mile), which follows the stream and climbs the wooded slopes overlooking the creek valley. The Mathis Trail (0.7 mile) includes some brief, steep climbing as it makes a southern loop, but it then turns north and takes an easy grade to cross Elachee Creek and meet the Ed Dodd Trail. The paved Geiger Trail (also a braille-signed interpretive path) is a 0.5-mile loop that takes you to the Walnut Creek Overlook, which sits at treetop level for a bird’s-eye view of the creek valley. The current hike combines several of these trails in a not-so-difficult 1.5-mile loop. Note that the trail is dog-friendly except Monday–Friday 9 am–3 pm.
