Cheatham Hill to Pigeon Hill Trails Loop Professional Review and Guide
"This section of the national battlefield park contains much evidence of the strong Rebel fortifications. Traces of earthworks may still be seen along the trails and historical markers note the sites of several long-vanished structures that soldiers would have seen at the time of the fighting (please do not walk on the historic fortifications). From the parking area, follow the trail southward a short distance, past original Rebel earthworks to the large Illinois Monument, dedicated by Union veterans on the occasion of the battle’s fiftieth anniversary in 1914. From the monument, descend a short distance past the preserved remains of a tunnel dug by Union troops in a failed attempt to blow up the Confederate fortifications. You will immediately turn right and follow a wide path that soon crosses a broad meadow."
