Fort Mountain State Park Gahuti Trail

Fort Mountain State Park: Gahuti Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The elevation profile of the Gahuti Trail looks like a healthy cardiogram, with frequent and regular peaks and valleys that will definitely get your heart pumping. The upshot is that it covers diverse terrain, from ridges with awesome views to jungle creek bottoms and windy hilltops.

It’s possible to complete the trail in a single day, but you should be in very good condition to try it. If you choose to make this a two-day backpacking trek, there are four backcountry campsites, two of which lie near water sources. You can hike the loop in either direction; it’s described clockwise."

Detailed Trail Descriptions from Our Guidebooks

"The Gahuti Trail offers the most comprehensive look at the geology, flora, and fauna of Fort Mountain State Park. Its path completely circles the crest of the mountain, traversing a number of habitats and featuring frequent vistas of the surrounding country. Additionally, the trail provides for the opportunity for a multi-day trek using the back-country campsites provided along the way. The Gahuti Trail backcountry loop is one of the featured hikes in the park and takes advantage of more than half of the 14 miles of walking trails in the state park."

"The Gahuti Trail circumnavigates the crest of Fort Mountain, one of Georgia’s most distinctive peaks, located on the western perimeter of the Cohutta Mountains. The Gahuti Trail travels through a variety of environments from rhododendron-choked creeks to rocky overlooks to pine woods to oak forests to cool stream waterfalls. There is only a 500-foot differential between high and low elevations, but the many ups and downs aggregate to a much greater elevation change than that."

This hiking is often overlooked for the more popular "high points" nearby. You may well have the trail to yourself. Spring & Fall are the best times to enjoy colors. Plenty of water available, if you carry a filter.
