Amicalola Falls State Park Appalachian Approach Trail

Amicalola Falls State Park: Appalachian Approach Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Big decisions are made on this 8.1-mile path that runs from Amicalola Falls State Park to the beginning of the Appalachian Trail (AT ) at Springer Mountain. Many people intending to complete the entire AT get their first sobering dose of rugged backpacking on the Approach Trail.

It is here that a good number of hikers realize they are not fit enough, have an overloaded pack, or lack the desire to walk all the way to Maine. If you’re considering an AT thru-hike, or if you’re just seeking a good backcountry trip, the Approach Trail will give you a good taste of the AT."

"Amicalola, a Cherokee word meaning “tumbling waters,” perfectly describes Amicalola Falls. Formed by Little Amicalola Creek plunging 729 feet in several cascades, it is the highest waterfall east of the Mississippi River and serves as the centerpiece of an 829-acre park. The state park has seven short hiking trails totaling 4.5 miles and serves as the trailhead for two much longer hikes that leave the property and cross onto Chattahoochee National Forest lands. The featured hike is a long trek on the Appalachian Approach Trail." Read more

It was breathtaking literally!!! Oh how beautiful it was, but this is not for those looking for an easy afternoon walk! This trail is very strenuous! You really need to be in pretty good physical condition for this one. However,if you are up to the task it is the most beautiful trail I have ever hiked! Make sure and check out the Len Foote Inn.
