Cathead Creek and Rice Canals

Cathead Creek and Rice Canals Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"From Cathead Creek paddlers can head upstream for a little exploration toward Buffalo Swamp or continue downriver where this tidally influenced waterway begins passing many old rice cultivation canals. The creek then hits the ears of the Cathead, a pair of oxbows that the river has broken through. Keep southeasterly on the ever-widening waterway to pass more old rice canals.

Pass another oxbow, leaving Cathead Creek to begin a journey through slave-created canals overhung with vegetation. The tides can run fast through these canals, which adds to the fun of the paddle. Eventually the canals end at the uppermost Darien River, which you follow to the paddle’s end."
