Altamaha Delta

Altamaha Delta Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The Altamaha River basin is the second largest on the East Coast. Formed at the confluence of the Ocmulgee and Oconee Rivers, it drains much of Georgia. This lowermost part of the Altamaha is ecologically important as an estuary not only for wildlife but also for the seafood industry.

Here the Altamaha Delta is not merely one river but a series of channels both big and small, including man-made canals that date back to the slave days. These waterways were important for transporting lumber, which also had a heyday on the coast following the rice cultivation."
