Celebrate National Public Lands Day on September 26th with free admission to Unicoi State Park and Lodge. You'll find many ways to show your support for Georgia State Parks' mission to preserve, protect, and provide access to public Green Space. You can either take advantage of volunteer opportunities that day such as trail inspection or litter pick-up, take advantage of a great day for a fall hike. Or make it a vacation, with Unicoi State Park Lodge's new Lodge-ical rates. Free admission day is 9/26/09.

Good hike, went from Unicoi to Anna Ruby Falls. This direction you are hiking UP and Up and UP. At the top there is an established fire ring and you can put a few tents on the ridge. The next day we came down, bit tough and some rain made the hike challenging. But finishing at the Falls was a great HIGH for the kids.

Hiked the Helen/Unicoi trail that runs between the Lodge at Unicoi State Park and downtown Helen. It was a 2.9 mile hike. Terrain was 85% level with a few small hills and switchbacks. Overall a very easy hike. The blaze color did change which was a bit confusing. It starts out as a yellow blaze from the lodge at Unicoi and changes over to a green blaze midway. There are signs along the way that point to either destination - which helped elimintae confusion over the blazes. If you are staying at Unicoi its a great day hike into town and then back. About 1.5 hours each way at a slow pace.

Walked from Unicoi Park's primitive campsites to Helen. Very easy hike, relaxing, a few little hills with switchbacks, bridges for all river crossings. 3 hours round-trip at leisurely pace including short stop in Helen for bathrooms. Public restrooms can be found by going down to main street below Unicoi Hill Park, turn left and go to second crosswalk, cross main street and turn left - bathrooms are ahead just across Unicoi Street (near river.) Also did the Lake Loop trail. Very easy again, well marked, several very picturesque spots, one place where you can see Mt. Yonah in the distance behind the dam. Allow 1 hour for leisurely stroll.

Very nice trail, would have been better if a tornado did not come through less than a week ago and not a bunch of trees down blocking the trail. I just climbed over the trees or hiked around them. Very well laid out and nicely marked.

Hiked the Bottoms loop 2.5 trail and the Lake Loop trail. The Bottoms loop trail is very nice, I was going to continue it to Helen but that was closed but should be open by fall. The Lake Loop trail was OK but I will not hike Lake Loop again.

This park is often crowded with tourists from nearby Helen, but the trails are seldom used. You won't get any dramatic overviews on these trails, but the colors in the fall are phenomenal & once you leave the parking lot, you can expect solitude.
