Blankets Creek

Blankets Creek Professional Review and Guide

"You’ll hardly have time to look around as this route is so twisty and curvy. If and when you do look around, you’ll see the pretty site of Lake Allatoona somewhere off one side of the trail or the other. With its proximity to Atlanta, expect to see plenty of other cyclists in the woods. The area closes at dark and you’ll switch direction each day, so check the board before starting out. This ride is 5.3 miles of single track."

Excellent trail system with plenty of trail to explore for all levels and keep you coming back. This is the mecca for NW Atlanta riders and is very well maintained and regulated. Be sure to check online or call the trail hotline before coming out because it is closed whenever its too wet or soft outside. I rode one of the two advanced loops and one intermediate loop. The advanced was a gasser...tons of climbing up steep long hills and switchbacks and then immediately into steep, narrow downhill and then repeat the process. It's a great workout, but you really don't get to enjoy a long fast downhill because of the straight up, straight down nature of the ride. It's also got plenty of roots, rocks and very tricky turns, so its a great place to enhance your skills. If you haven't rode in a while, I would recommending building your endurance before venturing on the advanced trails. The intermediate trail was more fun as it had some challenging climbs, but longer downhill sections to really get moving. It still had plenty of challenging terrain, but if you like speed, it allows for much more.

Rode 9 miles the rest was closed. Did an intermediate and advanced intermediate, it was well maintained with lots of twists and turns. Lot of people! I'd ride it again if I were visiting Atlanta.

The riding at Blankets is much improved over the last time I was there. I rode it probably 5 years ago, and there was no advanced loop. The addition of the advanced loop makes this a very fun ride. When you realize that on alternating days, it is ridden in opposite directions, its like having 2 trails in one! I wish I could give 4.5 stars. I reserve 5 stars for things like Porcupine Rim, or Gooseberry Mesa.

Great trail network created by the Army Corp of Engineers. The Advanced Loop (a.k.a. Black or South Loop) is open and is about 4 miles long. This loop is great, a good aerobic workout. What makes it technical isn't one or two individual sections, but the fact that it doesn't let up. You are either running switchbacks, climbing, traversing rock garden, roots or logs the whole time, so you don't get a real break. Nice!. The Blue loop is also a lot of fun and a ride the you can really pick up speed and catch air or burn some turns.

Fun trial, really technical, but fun. It has a fun down hill part called dragons tail, and a fast run called racoon run. Great trail, boyscout have done a little work, and but in some benchs.
