Vogel State Park Campground

Vogel State Park Campground Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This is the second oldest state park in Georgia. Located amid Chattahoochee National Forest on land donated by Fred Vogel, the park makes the most of its mountain environs. One look at the campground will tell you that.

The campground is great for tent campers, due to the 18 walk-in campsites, plus a loop exclusively for tents, vans, and pop-up campers. Hikers love to tackle the trails that traverse the mountains; when they return to their campsite, they still feel at one with nature, as the campground is integrated into the sylvan scenery."

This campground is a bit of a mix: the amenities like the lake, hiking trails, and picnic areas are just gorgeous, but my wife and I found the campsites themselves to be a bit too close to one another for comfort. The drive-in sites are literally on top of one another, and even the walk-in sites are generally closer than I'd like. We stayed at walk-in site D, which was nicely secluded, but hampered by being on a steep slope that made it difficult to set up chairs near the fire pit.

One bonus: the Mountain Crossings store at Walasi Yi is just a mile or two down the road from the campground. It's a must-visit for Appalachian Trail fans.

Really great campground with all the comforts of home. Water, electricity, flush toilets, hot showers and a store to buy the essentials (ice, firewood, snacks). Campsites are great for all types. We tent camped on the upper loop (#9) and had a short walk to the toilets. Quiet at night even with many families there. You need to make reservations far in advance and get there early (reservations do not guarantee a particular site). Lots of trails around the campground. Bear Hair Trail is the best.
