Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area: Cochran Shoals Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Cochran Shoals, whose 3.1-mile Fitness Trail skirts the Chattahoochee River, is one of the most heavily used outdoor areas near Atlanta, drawing 3 million visitors a year. The gravel path is well maintained, and the river provides some great scenery for walkers and runners. In addition, the Fitness Trail is wheelchair-accessible.
Although Cochran Shoals is popular among walkers and joggers, it also offers superb birding for migrant land birds in spring and fall, on the trails along the river. The hike detailed here begins on the Fitness Trail and then turns onto a short boardwalk where you can look for birds feeding in the marshy areas. The path then crosses woodland hills west of the river and returns to more bottomland forest before reconnecting with the Fitness Trail. You can then complete the long Fitness Trail loop, and even detour along the way to escape the crowds and explore a tucked-away creek."
