Weeki Wachee River

Weeki Wachee River Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The Weeki Wachee River is a wonderful Florida freshwater-spring-fed river that winds through miles of woodland, sometime canopied overhead, past houses and docks to the Gulf of Mexico near Bayport. At its source the river rises in a pool in the Weeki Wachee Springs State Park close to US 19. The park offers underwater mermaid shows and water rides.

The round-trip described here begins at Rogers Park on the tidal river 2 miles upstream from the Gulf, climbing upstream to the source and returning with the current. This offers the magic of increasingly clear water the closer you get to the spring. The comparatively slower rate of progress working upstream against the current makes it easier to observe wildlife than on the faster downstream return journey."

2-6 hours
Duration
The lower part of the river, including Rogers Park, is tidal. The flow is always in the same direction at Rogers Park but the speed slows with a rising tide and is faster during the falling tide. The non-tidal river runs faster after rain, and this also alters the effect of the tide at Rogers Park
Tidal Information
Be prepared to cover up and move quickly on your return to Rogers Park in the quiet of evening. No-see-ums and mosquitoes can be diabolical when the wind dies around sundown.
