New River

New River Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The New River originates in the far north of the Apalachicola National Forest, draining a wide region of Liberty County bordered by the Apalachicola River on the west and the Wakulla River to the east. It can be paddled south of the FH 13 bridge, commonly known as Carr Bridge, along a corridor of the New River– Mud Swamp Wilderness.

Many fallen logs and riverine obstructions make this a challenging paddle. The New River then breaks into impassable channels before becoming one main channel again in the southeast corner of the wilderness. Here it leaves the national forest and enters Franklin County and Tates Hell State Forest. By this point the river has generally sufficient fl ow for year-round paddling and is more open. The dark, Gulf-bound waterway begins to widen and become tidally influenced before leaving the state forest and reaching Carrabelle and opening into the Gulf at Dog Island. State Forest access points along River Road, River Road West, and a bridge, ramp, and day-use area off Gully Branch Road make trips of differing lengths very easy."

Lots of trees in the way - we couldn't make it the entire way. Probably could have done portage but it just didn't seem worth it.
