Juniper Springs Recreation Area Campground

Juniper Springs Recreation Area Campground Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This recreation area was developed well in the 1930s and is well taken care of today. Clear, 72-degree Juniper Springs is the centerpiece of this Ocala National Forest landmark. The springs well up at 13 million gallons per day into continental America’s only subtropical national forest. The campground is aesthetically integrated into the landscape and has a separate loop for tent campers only.

The best loop is the Fern Hammock Tent Camp Area. The paved road ends, and the campsites begin beneath a tall canopy of palm trees and southern hardwoods such as hickory. Three campsites on the main road are immediately followed by a spur loop with seven sites near a low-lying area."

As a first time camper in Florida I must acknowledge that Juniper lived up to our expectations. The sites were very spacious and private. We went during mid May and although it was extremely hot in the day the nights were very cool and perfect sleeping temperature. The canoe ride was very long and is definitely not something for the once a year kayaker. The springs were nice, not exactly what I had in mind though. It reminded me a bit of a local swimming pond or possibly even a public pool. I dove in quickly and was out as fast. The springs were very crowded and I was in search of something more peaceful. If I had children it would have been great. As I mentioned, it was similar to a public pool but in a more natural way. The nature trail is a definite must see. At the end of the wooden trail it becomes almost mystical. Its not to long of a trail either, my 60 mother had no trouble with the walk partially in thanks to the wooden walk way. The grounds were very clean and well kept, The restrooms and showers were also extremely clean. I would certainly go back again.
