Lido Key Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Lido Key is one of the islands that enclose Sarasota Bay close to the southern end. Although Lido Key is accessible by road, this trip begins on Siesta Key to enhance the island experience by adding the short return crossing of Big Sarasota Pass to the circuit of Lido Key. A small wildlife refuge and park occupies the southern end of Lido Key, with a park recreation beach bordering the Pass and mangrove tunnels to explore extending behind.

At the northern end are the twin attractions of the Save Our Seabirds Wild Bird Learning Center, which has replaced the earlier Pelican Man bird rehabilitation center, and Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium, a marine research station. Both are open to the public, making this a great place to stop midway through the trip to get a close-up view of many species of local birds and of the sea life that often lurks somewhere beneath your kayak when you paddle, including sharks, barracuda, manatees, and turtles."

The tide floods into and ebbs from the southern end of Sarasota Bay through the passes. On the longer route the tide is weakest close to the shore and increases farther offshore, so keep close to shore if the stream is against you.
Tidal Information
The passes can be busy with small boat traffic. If so, wait for a suitable opportunity and then cross straight over the marked channel without delay.
