Myakka River

Myakka River Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"One of Florida’s designated state scenic rivers, the Myakka originates in east central Manatee County, in cattle country. From there it winds southwesterly, enters Sarasota County, and becomes a central feature of Myakka River State Park, a 58-square-mile park. While in the park it merges with Clay Gully and opens into Upper Myakka Lake, a beautiful expanse of water known for its alligators.

Upper Myakka Lake is the beginning for paddlers, and the river is generally paddleable year-round from this point. Upper Myakka Lake empties into a river channel bordered by open grasses and some hardwood hammocks. Entrance into the preserve is limited to 30 people per day, and a permit is required."
