Myakka River

Myakka River Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The Myakka River winds through Myakka River State Park, passing through two lakes. It offers one of the finest opportunities to observe alligators in abundance. The river is freshwater and flanked by grassy marshes and oak and palm hammocks.

Many bird species are at home here, including the huge sandhill crane and the limpkin. We’ll look at two routes. The upper route starts at the upper lake launching ramp and finishes at the southern entrance to the park, taking in a circuit of the upper lake and a descent of part of the river. The lower route descends the Myakka River from the southern entrance to the park and encircles the lower lake before returning upstream to the starting point."

Tidal Information
Alligators are wild animals, and your safety depends on treating them as such. Be wary if you land at any point other than the designated launch sites. Many of the obvious beaches are alligator haul-outs: Please, no swimming! And on an unusual note, the park warns that vultures at Upper Myakka Lake have developed a taste for window moldings and other vehicle trim. They recommend you avoid parking at the lake area before 10 a.m. to limit the chance of damage.
