Shell Mound Trail

Shell Mound Trail Professional Review and Guide

"This boardwalk trail loops through a hardwood hammock that’s sustained considerable damage. In addition, some of the non-native species are being removed, so the landscape will be changing dramatically in the coming years. This hammock, growing atop a Calusa Indian shell mound, offers many tall examples of gumbo limbo, sea grape, sable palms, and live oaks.

The trees provide shelter for indigo snakes, diamondback rattlesnakes, and gopher tortoises. Best known for its peeling bark, the gumbo limbo has a green bark that turns red when it peels and new layers of bark emerge. You’ll see several examples close-up since a number of the trees lean over the boardwalk, almost blocking the path."
