St George Island

St. George Island Professional Review and Guide

"Includes: Saint George Island Park Beaches, Primitive Trail. Until 1965, St. George Island could be reached only by boat. Today, the toll bridge crossing Apalachicola Bay from the mainland passes over a rich fishery famous for its oysters. The bridge ends on the rapidly developing central part of the island. St. George’s sands are brilliantly white. During a full moon, the light reflecting from the sand is bright enough to read by. Let your imagination wander and the whole landscape seems cloaked in a pure, fresh snow.

A cool breeze off the Gulf often adds to the illusion. Like all the Gulf barrier islands, St. George is a prime birding area in fall and winter, when numerous migratory species visit. As many as thirty-three species of warbler have been sighted, along with dark-eyed junco, northern gannet, red-breasted nuthatch, and savannah sparrow. Special Attractions: Incredibly beautiful beaches bordered by high sand dunes and the Gulf of Mexico. Good winter bird watching."

This trail is is not one of my favorites for walking due to the soft sand for almost all of the 3 miles in, but the campsite was well worth every step. There are however benches every mile to stop and rest without having to sit on the ground. At the campsite there are 2 picnic tables and 2 benches near the fire pit. The site is approx. 50 feet from the waters edge and is great at sunset/sunrise. The boys and I saw more wildlife here than any other trail we've done in FL so far. Most of it being sea life like Fiddler, Ghost, & Blue Crabs, the countless differente types of birds, as well as the dolphines that came by in the morning and stayed till after lunch. The boys especially like heading down to the water after dark and seeing the thousands of fiddle crabs that come out to feed.
