St Joseph Peninsula Trail

St. Joseph Peninsula Trail Professional Review and Guide

"The fourteen-mile walk through the interior of the St. Joseph Peninsula provides a close look at sand pine scrub and pine flatwood habitats. Notice the ridges of sand behind the dunes. These long fingers of high ground are often divided by ponds, swampy areas, or grassy meadows.

Such wet depressions are always good places to watch for bird life. Special Attractions: A spectacular stretch of unspoiled beach populated by numerous shorebirds throughout the year. It is also a nationally-known site for observing hawks during the fall migration."

June is probably not the best time to hit this trail, which is more like a sandy road. The park doesn't open until 8am, so unless you stay at the park's cabins or campground, you must deal with the heat of summer. Did see plenty of deer and small lizards. Also, a couple of large owls. The interior does have some low lying swampy areas, which provide some relief in the shade. The parks' beaches are very worthwhile. Perfect for kids - with very clear water for snorkeling.
