St. Joseph Peninsula State Park Campground Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"St. Joseph Peninsula State Park is a narrow spit of land that juts out into the Gulf of Mexico. It is surrounded by water. A wilderness preserve covers the last 1,650 acres of the sliver of land. The huge sand dunes and miles of beach and woods will beckon you. One of the two park campgrounds is ideal for tent campers.

You’ll pass a marsh and enter the long, narrow campground loop. It has 60 campsites; all but 11 are on the outside of the loop. The campground has an open feel, even though there are tall slash pines scattered about. The first 28 sites back up to a pine flatwoods that changes to marshy wetland. The holly known as yaupon grows in clumps to break up the campground."

The campsite is pristine and full of interesting vistas. At low tide you can walk miles out on the beach. There is a limited number of "backcountry" sites - which are only a 2.5 mile hike from the car park - but that's far enough to get peace and quiet. Also, the sea breeze keeps the campground cool, which is key for FL camping in the summer.
