Loop Trails: DuPuis Management Area Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Located along the northeastern edge of the Everglades in Martin and Palm Beach Counties, much of this 21,900-acre area was drained for pastureland and used to raise Dutch white-belted cattle, sheep, and goats.

DuPuis Management Area is owned by the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD), which intends to restore these wetlands, and is managed in cooperation with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. A 15-mile section of the Florida National Scenic Trail (FNST), divided into four stacked loops, goes through the area, which contains many rare and endangered species, including the Florida panther."

The trailhead is Gate 2, on Florida route 76, about 6 miles west of the 710-76 intersection. At the trail head is limited information but a donation is requested. I think a donation is in order. The trail is maintained by Florida Trail Association and is marked "foot travel only" however there is plenty of horse sign on the trail. The trail is a series of stacked loops from north to south, eventually hooking up with the Florida Trail Ocean to Lake okeechobee trail. The first loop is about 3.5 miles long from the gate out and back. The first loop is dry, no wading. Cabbage palm and pine trees rule the day. there are extensive grasslands as well and many wildflowers. The colors are nice, although the landscape is monotonous and can become boring. This is a multiuse area and popular, so you will likely see many others. Get on the trail at sunrise for a colorful and quiet experience.
