Guana River State Park

Guana River State Park Professional Review and Guide

"Few trails in Florida come closer to the Atlantic Ocean than the ten-mile, doubletrack network of loops on this peninsula. The Tolomato River, a section of the Intracoastal Waterway, borders the park on the west. The land between it and the Atlantic Ocean goes from low-lying marsh to high ground with hardwoods and pines. But you're never far from water. Or sand.

In fact, it is easy to think of Florida as equal parts of water and sand. The wide paths are marked by color codes and can be easily followed except on the north end, where the trails leave the park and enter the wildlife management area. Otherwise, you can expect tot see high dunes and a large midden-mounds of shells whose clams and oysters fed the first humans in this area."

"Guana River State Park is mainly a beach park with some very nice riding areas hidden away in a coastal hammock at its southeastern end. Only a few miles from St. Augustine, the park provides great Atlantic Ocean swimming and surf fishing as well as some freshwater lake fishing.

The bicycle trails are thoroughly delightful and would be enjoyed by all levels of riders and hikers. The absence of horses and existence of the tree canopy allows the unpaved road surfaces to be maintained in reasonable shape for bikes. Lots of rain will result in some mud holes, but most areas should be navigable. Trails: Dirt double track, 8.5-plus miles. Location: St. Johns County."

GUANA LOOP 1.7mi: Good trail for birdwatching & nature. Saw lots of woodpeckers & a nesting osprey! Trail is narrow at times with some obstacles & tree roots. Even with obstacles, we were able to use a stroller on the trail. SHELL BLUFF RD 1.1mi: Nice wide trail with minimal obstacles. Dead ends at river with scenic view. Not as good for birding an Guana Loop. BOTH TRAILS: beware of seasonal hunters who drive way too fast!

Except for a short single track trail with Palmetto roots in the north section, this is easy biking. More for the family, maybe some speedwork or night riding since the trails are not technical. Insects especially mosquitos, yellow flies, and ticks are numerous and hungry in the summer.
