"For over 185 years Fort Pickens has stood, watching over and protecting Pensacola Bay and the city of Pensacola. The fort has a rich and storied history that dates back to its original construction in 1829, eventually being completed in 1834. Its mission was to protect Pensacola but more importantly the Navy Yard.

Fort Pickens, the largest of four forts built to defend Pensacola, is steeped in history from its days during the Civil War through World War II, but why drive to the fort to experience this fascinating history when you can hike it on this wonderful trail that takes you not only to the fort but over bayous teeming with birds and the beaches of Pensacola Bay?"
