Red Trail Oscar Scherer State Park

Red Trail: Oscar Scherer State Park Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The best opportunity for wildlife viewing occurs after the trail veers away from the homes and moves toward South Creek. Don’t be lured off the main path by any of the service roads you pass; stay on the trail. As in most areas, birds are the predominant wildlife. Great horned owls live in the slash pines near the trail, with their newborn most easily visible in March.

In addition to the scrub jays and sand hill cranes that also favor the area are the chuck-will’s-widow, a nocturnal bird you may see close to sunset. Once you hear the bird’s distinctive call, it’s obvious how the bird received its name. It does cry a loud “Chuck-will’s-widow,” though the first “chuck” being quiet and inaudible at a distance."
