Turner River and Halfway Creek Paddling Trails

Turner River and Halfway Creek Paddling Trails Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Canoe or kayak along mangrove-lined creeks with the option of paddling to Chokoloskee Bay, Chokoloskee Island, Everglades City, or the Ten Thousand Islands. The Turner River meanders through freshwater marsh and mangrove habitat, and Halfway Creek traverses mangrove habitat. Both trails are scenic and offer access to the Ten Thousand Islands and Chokoloskee Island.

Special considerations: Mosquitoes and biting flies in summer and fall. Tides and wind can make paddling a strenuous ordeal at times, especially in the open waters of Chokoloskee Bay. Parts of these trails may be impassable during low tide in the dry season. The Turner River can become overly popular in the busy tourist season in winter, so paddlers wanting more solitude might consider Halfway Creek instead. How full the parking lot is will be a good indication.

Scenic value: Good to excellent. The Turner River meanders through freshwater marsh and mangrove habitat, and Halfway Creek traverses mangrove habitat. Both trails are scenic and off er access to the Ten Thousand Islands and Chokoloskee Island."

My 15 year old daughter and I floated the Turner River in October. The water level was very high and we were unwarned about the severe tightness of the mangrove tunnels. At one point, due to the water being so high, we had to push up as hard as we could, while laying down completely in the kayak, in order to get under the mangrove. The mangrove tunnels were exhilarating and definitely a different type of experience.

The whole trip was wonderful. Wildlife included alligators, heron, egrets, kingfisher, and osprey. We rented 2 Wilderness Systems solo kayaks from North American Canoe at the Ivey House in Everglades, City (239-695-3299). The provide shuttle services and an essential map too.

This was a beautiful trip on Halfway creek deep into Mangrove lined waterways. Water was like glass and wildlife abundant.
