Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This route is a microcosm of south Florida in many ways. It reveals human hands on the landscape and offers a good view of the beauty left under park protection. First, paddle down a man-made canal, definitely a part of modern south Florida. Come to an attractive habitat of sawgrass, cattails, and tree islands.

Then enter a strange and wonderful mangrove tunnel that turns into a brackish stream beneath a taller shady forest. Leave the park boundary, pass by houses, then go under the bridge of an artificial causeway to emerge in the wide-open, busy Chokoloskee Bay, ending your paddle at Gulf Coast Ranger Station. Consider paying for a shuttle from an outfitter to make this a one-way day paddle. This creek is not on the waterproof charts, but the route is marked most of the way, and the Big Cypress National Preserve offer GPS tracks available for download to make your paddling less of a navigational challenge. The preserve has also marked a loop off Halfway Creek, making a shuttle unnecessary."
