Mounds Pool Trail Professional Review and Guide
"Located on the Gulf of Mexico, an area as rich in natural resources as St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge had to be appealing to Florida’s earliest inhabitants. It was. Evidence indicates this area was inhabited from 10,000 B.C. to the late eighteenth century. The Indians here lived almost exclusively off fish and shellfish. On the Mounds Pool Trail, look for the oak tree with a marker showing the height of the storm surge of an 1843 hurricane. It would have drowned most people in its path."
