Starkey Wilderness Park Campground

Starkey Wilderness Park Campground Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Back in the 1930s, Mr. Jay B. Starkey began a cattle operation in what was then rural Pasco County. Later, he worked out a deal with Southwest Florida Water Management District; his land, encompassing parts of the Anclote and Pithlachasotee rivers, is now a large wilderness area and well field for coastal Pasco County.

It’s topped off with a first-rate campground designed for tent campers only. Outdoor enthusiasts can use the campground as a jumping-off point to explore foot trails, equestrian paths, and a special 7-mile paved trail that is popular with hikers and bikers alike. Be apprised that the campground is nice enough that you may not want to “jump off” from it, but instead just relax in your wooded civilization escape zone."

Salt Springs campground, eventhough on state property, is run by a private entity. Which is a good thing. There's no park rangers running possie on you for stupid infractions 24/7. And, heres the big plus....This campground, unlike Juniper and Alexander allow Alcohol. I've camped at salt a few times, and most campers are well behaved, and the management does patrol the area on golf carts, and are very polite. Also, you can call ahead to reserve sites. I recommend it on any weekend of the year, it will pack up on Fri & Sat.
Sites are large with fire pits, they just replaced the old wooden picknick tables with large rubber coated metal ones. Bathrooms are nice, there's a water faucet on each site, they do allow pets. Spring is very nice too, and close to the camp area.
Go to the marina down the street and rent a canoe or pontoon boat and make the 4 mile run run to the lake.
