Comprising 189,898 acres, Blackwater River is the largest of Florida’s three state forests. This forest is one of the most scenic but least known parts of Florida, and its hilly terrain and red soil are more reminiscent of Georgia than Florida. The stands of longleaf pines here are among the finest in the United States. There are two popular hikes here. The Jackson Red Ground Trail is the longer, following the route of General Andrew Jackson during his 1818 campaign in Florida. This is also a public hunting area. The white sand bottom, beaches, and sandbars contrast with the dark tannic water that gives the Blackwater River its name. The 21-mile Jackson Red Ground Trail is named for the striking red soil, uncommon in Florida. Originally an old Indian trading path, the route was used by General Andrew Jackson in 1818 when he marched 1,200 men from the Apalachicola River to Pensacola, a distance of 225 miles, in eighteen days. Avid hikers can easily walk this section (another part of the Florida Trail) in one long day.
