Blackwater River State Park Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Blackwater River is only 590 acres, but it encompasses a fine section of the Blackwater River. The river itself has a pure sand bottom, and its banks and the many sandbars are excellent for swimming, tubing, splashing, fishing, and generally having a great time. Although the water—which averages only 2.5 feet in depth—is a deep golden brown, stained with leeched tannin from tree roots, the river’s environment contrasts remarkably with the often muddy and smelly swamp rivers of the region.

While Blackwater is a destination for canoeists and kayakers, its shallow depth and multitude of other users may make a paddle frustrating, depending upon a person’s sense of humor. Canoe and tube rentals are available from outfitters in the area. The park’s shaded and recently renovated campsites are a short walk from the river. Several trails offer excursions to the interior of the park."
