Loop Road Scenic Drive Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Sightsee by vehicle or bicycle on a road that is paved on the east end for 8 miles and gravel the remainder of the way, with opportunities to stop and explore on foot. Loop Road traverses cypress and mixed-hardwood swamp habitat.
There are opportunities to see white-tailed deer, black bears, river otters, feral hogs, and even endangered Florida panthers on or near the road (a good reason to drive slowly). The small village of Pinecrest offers a glimpse of home life for some very hardy people who got tired of city life and moved to this remote area to take up residence. Imagine living where the nearest town with a grocery store is more than an hour’s drive in either direction. It is definitely a no-frills lifestyle, but the people who chose it wouldn’t give it up for anything. The eastern portion is now lined with homes built by Miccosukee Indians complete with satellite dishes and other modern amenities."
