Cape Romano and Kice Island from Marco Island

Cape Romano and Kice Island from Marco Island Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The barrier islands of Kice Island and Cape Romano Island stretch south from Marco Island, pointing out past the huge bay of the Everglades coast to Cape Sable and beyond to the Florida Keys some 90 miles away. From the tip of Cape Romano
through 300 degrees of open view, you can see almost no development anywhere, except for the ruins of a few stilt houses now 0.5 mile offshore from the cape.

It’s a magical wilderness experience to walk this beach. Reach Cape Romano via sheltered mangrove channels and shallow lagoons that attract birds. Speed back along the white sand shore on the Gulf side, where waves throw up shells, and storms wreak changes that outdate the latest maps."

Duration
Be watchful for signs of water running swiftly from passes into the sea, as this may cause choppy conditions locally. On the Cape Romano section, the Morgan River can be difficult to negotiate at low water due to shallows.
Tidal Information
The Gulf coast is exposed to wave action. Be sure to check the weather forecast before leaving. As an extra precaution, stop on the west coast of Marco Island on your way to the launch to see the conditions before you commit. There is always an alternative to paddling back on the outer coast in rough weather: Simply reverse your outward route.
