St Marys River

St. Marys River Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The St. Marys River is one of Florida’s ?nest touring streams. Originating in Georgia’s Okefenokee Swamp as the North Prong of the St. Marys, the river soon forms the Florida–Georgia boundary. Downstream, the Middle Prong St. Marys adds its ?ow from the east side of Buckhead Swamp in the Big Gum Swamp of Florida’s Osceola National Forest.

After the two prongs merge, onward the St. Marys River ?ows in a giant horseshoe to end its run at the Atlantic Ocean near Fernandina Beach. The St. Marys has been considered for Wild and Scenic status, and concern for the river has evolved into an organization known as the St. Marys River Management Committee, which seeks to meld the interests of concerned citizens and adjoining government entities. They produce a good-quality river map. For the map and more information about the river basin, visit stmarysriver.org."

This is a great place to get used to paddling and working together if you have a tandem. We have two kayaks, a tandem and a solo. My wife and daughter paddle the tandem and my two year rides in the jump seat. We had a great time, easy paddle going down stream and crystal clear water. Only down side were the number of boats and tubers. I would rate this a great place to go and get comfortable with canoeing or kayaking.

Great kayak run, crystal clear water. spent lots of time off the boat snorkeling. saw loads of fish and turtles, even a family of otters. Tubers can crowd the river in the hot summer months.
