John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park Campground Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This park protects part of the only living coral reef in the United States. The powers that be have made exploring this coral reef easy for everyone.

Beware: the campground is nowhere near as enticing as the rest of the park, but you would never know it by the efforts you have to put forth to get a campsite here."

This is a great park for those who do not spend much time outdoors. The camptground is interesting, fairly clean and secure. We stayed for three days and enjoyed the water trail. There are rentals available and that is a plus and a minus. Many of those renting were unfamiliar with boating and had problems with their equipment. Kayakers should be aware that the trail opens out onto water that is open to high speed boats and all the wake activity you could never want.

Again it appears to be for the touristy type and there is nothing wrong with that.

The trails located in the park are vary small but also vary informative about the formation of the Keys. The diving is some of the best I have ever encountered. I would suggest too any divers that vist Pennekamp to use their dive charter. It takes a little getting use too navigating you boat through the reef and could end up stressing youself out just getting to the dive sites. So again save yourself some time, enjoy the ride, and explore the deep.
