Three Lakes Wildlife Management Area: North and South Loop Trails Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"The two loop trails of the Prairie Lakes unit are part of the Florida Trail system and join the through trail at the end of the South Loop. Hike them separately or hike both of them, or make them a part of a very long haul by hiking them in addition to the Linear Florida Trail.
Going left on the 5.5-mile North Loop, the trail skirts cypress ponds where bald eagles frequently nest. Outside of Alaska, Florida has more nesting bald eagles than any other state in the nation. Florida’s bald eagles nest at a time contrary to that in other parts of the country. Elsewhere, bald eagles nest in the spring and summer because food is at its most abundant. Florida eagles, on the other hand, nest in winter when prey here is most plentiful, in the dry winter season. When ponds shrink or dry up, fish are more concentrated and easier to locate."
