Loxahatchee River

Loxahatchee River Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The Loxahatchee is the only stream in Florida to be designated a National Wild and Scenic River, and just a few minutes on the stream will convince you that this designation is richly deserved. The upper river is a delight to kayakers and canoeists as it zigzags through a stunningly beautiful cypress swamp. Shortly after entering Jonathan Dickinson State Park, the Loxahatchee changes abruptly as it takes on the sedate character of an estuarine mangrove swamp.

It is customary for paddlers to take a lunch break at the Trapper Nelson Interpretive Site. Trapper Nelson, “the wild man of the Loxahatchee,” was a locally famous eccentric who developed a unique homestead years ago along the Loxahatchee. Canoe docks, picnic facilities, and drinking water are available at Trapper Nelson’s. Park rangers give daily presentations on the wildlife, vegetation, and lore of the Trapper Nelson site. Loxahatchee translates from Native American as “Turtle River.” During low water, common in winter, paddlers will have to pull their boats and longer kayaks will have difficulty maneuvering the sharp bends and fallen trees of the upper Loxahatchee"

Launch at the Riverbend area its a county park with no fee to put in. The slow moving water outside Johnathan Dickenson is very pleasant. once you enter the park, have the cameras ready, the canopy cover is unforgettable and without the pictures, description gives it no justice. the river has 2 small dams the first with a foot and a half drop off and two walkways to carry over if you don't care down. the twisting and curving river has a few obstructions fallen and overhanging trees to add some fun. the second dam has a three foot drop and a single walkway and picnic area to take a break. all and all a very pleasant trip 4 to 5 hours round trip. the canopy provides protection from the sun and heat making this a 4 to 5 star run for beginners and nature buffs.

A lot of tall trees and birds. Nice to ride the calm waters while enjoying the view.
